Silent auction to save dogs

Underhound Railroad, a nonprofit that saves 90 to 110 dogs a year, will hold its annual fundraising silent auction beginning March 3.

Renee Coombs, the organization’s president-director since 2012, said the auction is in its fifth consecutive year. It is a lot of work, but well worth the effort, she said. “Last year we had around 200 donated and sold items. The auction tends to bring in $3,000 to $4,000.”

Coombs asks that anyone who would like to donate an item or service send a message to her, or Underhound Railroad's Facebook page. Include a photo and/or description of the item or service, a value, and dimensions, if applicable.

Coombs said some donated items are large and heavy, making them costly to mail to the winners. “In the past we've had to spend $100 shipping a painting that won $50.” This year she is hoping people who donate such items will cover the cost of mailing, so that all proceeds benefit the dogs and help them find their forever homes.

The auction will be posted on both the Underhound Railroad and Renee Coombs' Facebook pages, where pictures and/or descriptions of items can be viewed and bid on.

Email any questions to Coombs at the address on her Facebook page. The auction will run until March 17.

If you’re not interested in participating, but would like to support Underhound Railroad, monetary donations are always welcomed. Money may be given to Woodbrook Animal Clinic in Wiscasset, or you can donate through the Underhound Railroad website or Facebook page.  And volunteers are always needed.

Coombs has a favorite quote, from Karen Davison: “Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.”
