South Bristol town landing update

The construction of the new South Bristol town landing will be moving forward quickly in the coming weeks with the expectation that the project will be completed by the fall of 2014.

“We’ve been waiting forever for this,” South Bristol Selectman Chris Plummer said.

Although there are three other town docks, none of them are as convenient or accessible as the new town landing will be. “Too steep,” Plummer said.

The goal of the project was to provide ample parking and a boat ramp that would allow people to launch larger boats, rather than the smaller craft more suitable for the current town docks.

Plummer indicated that the old docks would be restructured and refortified in the coming three weeks, and that the entire parking lot would be paved in about a month. The hope is that residents will be able to enjoy the town landing come early fall.

Aside from the newly paved boat ramp and redone docks, the town is also adding a grassy picnic area to the right of the ramp.

“It’s going to be beautiful,” Plummer said.

The vision for the picnic area was originally for it to be all grass, but a paved path will now run through grass to the docks in an effort to make the entire area more wheelchair accessible. Situated with a beautiful view of the bridge and town, the grassy area will also allow those without boats to spend time by the water.

“The whole thing is going to be a real asset to the community and the fishermen,” said John Harris, a neighbor to the new town landing and a member of the South Bristol planning board.

The project is being funded by money taken out of the Ann Stratton fund, a former summer resident of the town from Shreveport, Louisiana.
