Supporting Mike Nylen for Dresden’s selectman

    Dear Editor:

A little over a year ago I was finally able to achieve a childhood dream of joining my local fire department. Having watched my father participate in a volunteer fire department, and growing up with him always rushing out to calls, I thought I knew what I was signing up for. Nothing can really prepare you for the sacrifice you’ll be undertaking when you sign those papers and join up.

My first months on the department were overwhelming and my training was limited. Mike Nylen made an impression on me from the first day I walked through those bay doors. His warm, welcoming presence took hold as he stopped what he was doing and showed me around, and began introducing me to everyone. He took the initiative to make sure I felt confident, prepared and always knew he was there if I needed anything.

Not long after joining the department, the tones sounded for a confirmed structure fire here in Dresden. I remember standing there scared, not knowing what to do. Mike didn’t let my fear overwhelm me; he was quick to guide me and help identify tasks to support my fellow firefighters at the scene. That day on the scene of the fire, I not only observed how Mike helped direct me, he also took initiative to support other firefighters on the site, making sure they had the resources needed. Working side by side, in dangerous situations with someone really showcases a person’s characteristics.

Mike is committed to our town; he exhibits strong leadership skills daily, and cares about the opinion and challenges his neighbors face. Lastly, what I appreciate most about Mike is that he will not pretend to have all the answers, but he knows where to find them and how to get the job done.

I hope each of my fellow Dresden neighbors will join me in supporting Mike Nylen for Selectboard June 13. I’m confident if he's elected, you will see the commitment he has to our community; the same commitment I get to see every Wednesday night and every time we respond to a call.
