Thank you, Todd Souza

This will leave a void. And yet, thanks to Todd Souza’s approach to leadership in his years directing parks and recreation, his departure won’t leave as big a void as it would have, had he been a lesser leader.

The staff’s enthusiasm for programs and its efforts to help those activities succeed is evident in any walk through Wiscasset Community Center and at each of the department’s events, some longstanding annual traditions; others, as new as last year. Souza is hands-on, helping with an event’s setup or talking with groups taking part. And he is consistently accessible for both our fun stories, when we preview or cover events and programs, and the more serious news, like the flood in the gym when a flying basketball met with a sprinkler head.

Souza doesn’t take center stage; under his direction, staff members have shined with their creativity and hard work. The department also has dedicated volunteers, from Wiscasset Middle High School students to senior citizens. People like to volunteer where they feel welcome, and that environment starts from the top down.

Wiscasset learned Tuesday night Souza is leaving. Our Facebook post drew several quick responses; we tend to see that result on posts about well-known, well-liked residents. As another well-known, well-liked resident, retired Wiscasset assessor’s agent Sue Varney, said in her post, Souza can be proud of his accomplishments, and he will be missed.
