The Maine Department of Transportation opened bids Nov. 15 on demolition and removal of the Haggett building.

Results of the bid opening are posted on MDOT’s website. The bidders were a Lewiston-based company, St. Laurent & Son, Inc. also known as Maine Heavy Equipment Rental, Inc. at $52,300, Ford Enterprises of Hope, $62,350 and M.O. Harris, Inc. of Howland, $95,700.

Award of the contract is pending. The contract calls for the work to be completed by Dec. 31.

The building at 36 Water St. was erected in 1916 and became home to one of Northern New England’s first Ford Motor Co. dealerships. For many years the two-story brick building was owned and occupied by CEI. The Midcoast Conservancy had leased the building since 2016.

The state purchased the property from CEI by eminent domain this past spring. After the building is razed, MDOT plans to construct a 25 to 30-space parking lot there as part of its $5 million Wiscasset Downtown Project.
