Tita V. Townsend, 74, of Edgecomb, died peacefully on Jan. 8, 2016 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice as a result of an accidental fall, which occurred only hours earlier. Her husband was at her side.

Born in Bangkok, Thailand on Sept 24, 1941 to the late Al and Miriam Vil, Tita, at the age of 13, immigrated to the United States with her family and settled in Phoenix, Arizona. She later moved to Rowayton, Connecticut where she met and married her husband, Corning Townsend. They moved to Davis Island, Edgecomb in 2002.

Tita was an avid gardener, artist and sailor; all of which were introduced and encouraged by her family while living in Thailand. After moving to Maine, she felt that her life had come into focus and was inspired by the people she met and by the innate beauty of the land. Her art flourished as did her gardens and her spirituality.

Tita, her husband, and their dog Demi, sailed 24,000 miles on their boat Blessed Spirit, setting sail from Edgecomb on four trips to the tropics.

She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Corning Townsend, and his two children, Christian Townsend and wife Kathy of South Portland and Jessica Townsend and her husband Eric Sokol of Portland. Tita is also survived by four loving and adoring grandchildren, Ryder Townsend, Scout Townsend, Tatreaux Sokol and RubyLew Sokol; her sister, Joan Meyers; niece, Michelle Meyers; and her brother, Rolf Vil, all living in Phoenix, Arizona.

There will be no immediate service, rather a celebratory memorial of Tita’s life will happen in late summer for family and friends, among Tita’s beloved gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Tita’s name to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME.
