Two-car accident in Wiscasset

A two-car accident on June 25 sent three to the hospital and backed up Wiscasset traffic for miles.

At approximately 1:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon the northbound driver of a 2004 Toyota pickup drifted over the center lane and into the southbound lane of Route 1 in Wiscasset where the vehicle collided with a 2005 Ford motor home. The crash occurred near the Flood Avenue turn-off in Wiscasset.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Nein was the primary investigator of the accident, and said that neither speed nor alcohol likely played a part in the accident that sent the driver of the truck to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta and two people in the camper to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Nein said all those involved were wearing their seat belts and that the crash set off airbags in both vehicles. The injuries were described as ranging from minor to potentially serious. Both vehicles are likely totaled, Nein said, and he added that he doesn’t expect criminal charges to be filed.

The accident caused traffic to be interrupted for an hour and a half, with traffic almost completely stopped on southbound Route 1. The line of traffic stretched on for miles in either direction of the accident.

Crews from the Wiscasset Fire Department, Wiscasset Police Department, Wiscasset Ambulance and Bath Fire Department and ambulance services and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident.
