UPDATED: After cruiser theft, police chase, suspect injured in crash

UPDATE: The young man who allegedly stole a Dexter Police cruiser this morning has been involved in a serious crash driving another car. Police were chasing the vehicle on Route 15 in Corinth when it crashed into trees. Tyler Tibbetts, 22, has been seriously injured and was pinned inside the wreck.

First responders were working to free him and a Lifeflight helicopter has landed nearby to fly him to Eastern Maine Medical Center. Tibbetts allegedly stole the Dexter cruiser about 11:30 while still in handcuffs. It was found abandoned a couple of miles away on Parkman Road in Garland about 90 minutes later. Police later found him behind the wheel of a second vehicle and chased the car along Route 15 until it crashed. Tibbetts was alone and it is not clear how he obtained the second vehicle. No officers were injured in today’s incident.

Original post: State Police have joined the search for a stolen Dexter Police Department cruiser.  The fully marked white Ford Explorer with number 2 on the front fender was stolen about 11:30 this morning and was last seen headed toward Garland.  

The driver, Tyler Tibbetts, 22, is in handcuffs.  Tibbetts should be considered armed and dangerous.  He is 5’9” tall, weighs 130 with brown hair and hazel eyes.  He was wearing tan shorts and a salmon colored tee shirt.   Anyone seeking this Dexter Police cruiser who call 911 immediately.
