Vacation nature day camps at Damariscotta River Association

Thu, 12/18/2014 - 2:15pm

The Damariscotta River Association (DRA) has announced that two Nature Day Camps will be offered this winter during school vacations. These programs give children opportunities to explore, learn and enjoy the outdoors with the guidance of a naturalist. Both programs will focus on wildlife in winter and include many activities including art and games that teach ecological concepts.

The first session is called “Birds in Winter” and it will be held Monday, Dec. 29 through Wednesday, Dec. 31 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. The children will meet a live duck to learn about its adaptations, dissect owl pellets, go bird watching, and make their own field guide. If weather permits, the group will also go sledding and dog sledding. The fee is $132 or $117 for DRA members. Pre-registration is required by Dec. 22.

The February Vacation “Wildlife in Winter” session is scheduled for Feb. 16-20 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. The kids will hike for animal tracks and signs with a naturalist, go dog sledding, create art projects, play nature-inspired games and much more. Pre-registration is required by Feb. 9. The fee is $220 or $195 for DRA members.

Gift certificates for these camps and DRA summer nature Camp Mummichog are available from the DRA. These vacation camp programs are open to children ages five to ten. Participants should bring two snacks and a lunch each day and come prepared to be outside for most of the day. Participants must register for the whole camp session. Contact the DRA to register. Limited scholarships are available. A health form will be required for all participants.

Visitors are welcome at the Great Salt Bay Heritage Center in Damariscotta as well as the many other DRA properties throughout the region. Family membership at the “Mussel” level is $40. For more information call 207-563-1393, email dra@damariscottariver.org, or view www.damariscottariver.org.
