The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has identified the two people who died in a Friday morning accident on Route 27 in Boothbay.

Donald Hudson, 85, of Madison, Connecticut was driving, and his wife, Doreen Hudson, 67, was a passenger in the car, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

The Madison, Connecticut Police Department assisted Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office in notifying the couple’s family, the release states.

An investigation at the crash scene revealed the vehicle, a GMC Envoy sport utility vehicle, was traveling north at a high rate of speed when Donald Hudson lost control.

The vehicle left the right side of the road and traveled down a ditch before striking an embankment, which caused the vehicle to go airborne, an earlier release states. The vehicle then flipped in the air, striking a utility pole and several trees before coming to rest on its roof.

Both occupants were wearing seat-belts.

Witnesses said they saw a small white dog at the scene with blood on its fur.

Animal control officer Betsy Pratt took the dog, which had suffered a head laceration, to the Boothbay Animal Hospital on Friday.

Veterinary Assistant Samantha Hicks said Monday that the dog looked to be a Maltese mix.

Dr. Dean Domeyer said Tuesday afternoon that the dog, Chloe, was doing “very, very well,” and that she had undergone surgery Friday to suture the head laceration. Domeyer said he had spoken to the couple’s relatives Tuesday about making arrangement to claim the dog.

Route 27 was closed for approximately three hours while the investigation was being conducted. Traffic was rerouted around Hardwick Road and River Road.

Members of the Boothbay Fire Department, Boothbay Harbor Fire Department and Boothbay Region Ambulance Service assisted the sheriff's office at the scene.

The sheriff's department has asked anyone who saw the crash or had contact with the victims before the crash to contact Deputy First Class Brian Collamore at 207-882-7332.
