Virginia Braley McDougall

Virginia Braley McDougall, 96, daughter of the late John and Mildred Morrill Braley of Saco, died on July 23, 2012 at St. Andrews Village, Boothbay Harbor. She was born in Cornish on April 18, 1916.

A graduate of Limington Academy and St. Barnabas Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, she was employed as a surgical nurse at St. Andrews Hospital, Boothbay Harbor for 39 years. She was hired immediately after receiving her R.N. degree to assist Dr. George Gregory in the O.R. and for many years thereafter assisted Dr. Phillip Gregory in hundreds of cases, many of which were emergency surgeries in the middle of the night. Not only did she do surgical duty in the O.R., she also supervised the Central Supply Department and served as Dr. Philip Gregory’s office nurse in the afternoons.

Virginia married Richard McDougall Jr. in 1940 and they celebrated 67 years together before his death in 2007. She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Roberts and husband Alfred Roberts of Boothbay Harbor; Kathryn McDougall of Greenbrier, Tennessee; grandchildren, Michael Roberts and wife Caroline of Boothbay, Meredith Fowlie and husband Justin of Boothbay; and great grandchildren, John Michael and Hannah Roberts and Andrew, Avery and Kameron  Fowlie. She was pre-deceased by her beloved son-in-law Charles Moore and 13 siblings.

Virginia was a member of the Pythian Sisters Temple and participated in the chorus of several of their minstrel shows along with her husband. She was also very active in the Boothbay Center School P.T.A.

Her retirement years were spent enjoying her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Other interests included flowers, birds, and outdoor work. During her last three years at the Gregory Wing, she lived for visits from her close friends, family and especially from her great grandchildren. She was very appreciative of the care and compassion of the Gregory Wing staff.

On Wednesday, August 1 at 2 p.m., there will be a committal service at Ocean View Cemetery in Boothbay Center. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at Simmons, Harrington and Hall Funeral Home, 975 Wiscasset Road, Boothbay. Both services will be led by Alfred Roberts and there will be a reception immediately following the service.
