    Dear Editor:

Once again it’s that time of year when we have important decisions to make. We are fortunate to live in a community where people care about becoming informed about the issues that concern us and who we will elect to oversee the running of our town. As a former Wiscasset educator, I was able to observe times when our town really flourished and functioned well. Letters to the Editor in the local newspapers were usually very positive and complimentary. It’s very disconcerting to read letters these days where folks seem to see things very differently.

Why has this changed? One aspect that aids in a smooth operation in a town is constant communication between all town officials. That way there are no “surprises.”

Since retiring I have volunteered at our Wiscasset Public Library, joined the Friends of the Library, and now serve on the board of trustees. I have had the pleasure of getting to know many people who devote much time volunteering at the library. One of these people is Katharine Martin-Savage who has served as president of the Friends group, supports the endeavors of our public library and is a former selectman. We are very fortunate that she is willing to serve again on the board of selectmen. Katharine is someone who knows how to initiate and provide the needed communication between the school and municipal officials.

We need Katharine on the board of selectman as she will reach out, meet frequently with all local officials, keep everyone informed, as well as listen. This is the definition of compromising and working leadership. This will, once again, allow Wiscasset to flourish and function in a way that makes us all proud to be Wiscasset citizens.
