Vote in Wiscasset today on school closure question

Tue, 12/09/2014 - 8:00am

Wiscasset decides today if it will agree to close Wiscasset Primary School next year. Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Wiscasset Community Center.

Shortly before polls opened Tuesday morning, Town Clerk Christine Wolfe said she was concerned that the day’s inclement weather will affect turnout.

“I think people are going to take one look outside and not come, but it’s important that they do (come),” Wolfe said.

The School Committee decided Sept. 15 to close the primary school. A petition for a town vote got today’s referendum on the ballot. The primary school would cost more to keep open than Wiscasset Middle School would, according to figures Interim Superintendent of Schools Lyford Beverage compiled.

The committee is seeking to lower its next budget to avoid a potential double-digit property tax hike next year.

Some parents and Wiscasset Primary School Principal Mona Schlein have questioned the middle school’s suitability to house the younger students it would receive from the primary school.
