After a nearly 50-year hiatus, “The Endless Summer” returns Thursday, July 31 at 7 pm. Bruce Brown had been making films about surfing since the late 1950s, this was his first film to receive a nationwide release; it was also the first serious cinematic look at the sport to click with a mass audience.

In his narration, Brown muses that if someone had enough time and money, they could literally follow the summer around the globe, and so Brown and two of his surfing buddies, Robert August and Mike Hynson, decide to do just that.

With their surfboards as luggage, August and Henson travel from one coastline to the next, trying the waves in Hawaii, Africa, Australia, Tahiti, and a number of other nations where most folks had never even seen a surfboard before. “The Endless Summer” also features a great surf-rock score by The Sandals.
The New Yorker magazine describes “The Endless Summer” as “Brilliant, a perfect movie.”

“Begin Again” is the latest film from writer-director John Carney (ONCE), a soul-stirring comedy about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who decamp for New York when he lands a deal with a major label.

But the trappings of his new-found fame soon tempt Dave to stray, and a reeling, lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, stumbles upon her performing on an East Village stage and is immediately captivated by her raw talent. From this chance encounter emerges an enchanting portrait of a mutually transformative collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City.

“Begin Again” is rated R. Plays Friday, Aug. 1 through Sunday, Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 3 at 3 p.m.

“Jersey Boys” is based on the Tony Award-winning musical about the iconic 1960s rock group The Four Seasons, directed by Clint Eastwood. “Jersey Boys” is rated R. It plays Monday, Aug. 4 and Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m.

The popular “Chef” movie returns Wednesday, Aug. 6 and Thursday, Aug. 7. Chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) suddenly quits his job at a prominent Los Angeles restaurant only to find himself in Miami, teaming up with his ex-wife, his friend and his son to launch a food truck. “Chef” also stars John Leguizamo, Sofía Vergara and Bobby Cannavale. “Chef” is rated R (for language).
