Westport Column: Squire Tarbox, a good-bye and more

Tue, 07/25/2017 - 7:15am

Hello friends and neighbors!

If you need a break from the heat of the kitchen, you can order pizza any Monday evening from the Squire Tarbox Inn. It’s best to call ahead (882-7693) at 4:30 to order your 10 inch pizza with whatever veggies, shrimp, meats, or anchovies that you choose, but walk-ins are accommodated as best as possible up to 7 p.m. Gluten free crust is available upon request. Prices range from $11 to $14, and you can either take the pizza home or eat at the Inn and enjoy some socializing.

After 15 years of successfully operating the Squire Tarbox Inn, Mario and Roni DePietro have decided retirement is beckoning. The 11-bedroom B & B is on the National Register of Historic Places as the 1763 house maintains its original boards and timbers. The 1820 addition houses the parlor and larger, more formal bedrooms, all with working fireplaces and private baths. The beautiful grounds, vegetable gardens, and free range chickens make a perfect place to run a farm to table restaurant. If you would like more information about this charming spot, check out their website www.squiretarbox.com.

The Westport Volunteer Fire Department is sorry to say good-bye to one of its very accomplished members, Roger Quandt, who is moving to Florida. Almost nine years ago Roger joined the department and continuously underwent training to become first a basic level EMT followed by intermediate level EMT, CPR instructor, EMT basic instructor, and the department’s EMS Director. Roger was always willing to hold CPR classes for those who needed or wanted the certification. If you see Roger, please thank him for his years of service and wish him well in new ventures. For the record, the new EMS Director will be James Richardson, current firefighter/EMT basic level.

The 13th annual Westport Island 10K Road Race, a fundraiser for the Fire Department, will be held this year on Sunday, Sept. 10. Rob Whitney conceived the idea for the race, and has successfully helped generate over $17,000 in proceeds over the past dozen years. The Fire Department assists with traffic control and medical standby during the race. For more information about the 10K race or 3.5 mile fun walk, check out www.westportisland.org. Those who register by August 24 are guaranteed a free T-shirt!

Do you like to play tennis? A small group of Westporters meet at least once a week to play socially on the court at the south end of the Island. This friendly group is looking for more participants who want to play for fun and get to know more of their neighbors in the process. If you are interested, please email Lisa McMahon at westat@aol.com for more details.

The Segerstrom Preserve at Squam Creek will be open to the public soon! Stay tuned for a ribbon cutting ceremony, tentatively planned for early August. Last Thursday a crew of 15 volunteers from the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT) and the Island pitched in to place and build four bridges across stream crossings and to continue to clear a network of trails. Volunteers have been helping out weekly throughout the summer, and you have another chance to pitch in this Thursday at 9 a.m. KELT is also planning a Summertime Shindig at Squam Creek Farm, 91 West Shore Road, for August 15 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets and information are available at www.kennebecestuary.org.
