Westport Island to decide on roadwork, more June 22

Westport Island voters face a $465,000 question at the annual town meeting Saturday, June 22 at Town Hall, 1217 Main Road. The meeting starts at 9 a.m.

According to the warrant at westportisland.us, the road committee and selectmen propose raising $350,000 to pave Doggett, Haskell,  Lord and North End roads, and $115,000 for ditching, shouldering, and culvert replacement.

It’s phase one of a five-phase, long term paving program the committee recommended, the warrant states. Any leftover funds would go toward phase two.

The roads need taking care of, First Selectman George Richardson said in a phone interview Saturday. “Let the people decide.”

They will also decide a pair of questions on the possible use of Wright House’s upper floor: One would authorize selectmen to let the non-profit Friends of Westport Island History, or the History Committee, “investigate the feasibility” of using the space to meet, work, and store and display artifacts; and if it turns out to be feasible, let selectmen enter an agreement with Friends or the committee to share electricity, heat and insurance costs.

A separate question proposes authorizing the board and the committee to agree on the upstairs’ use this summer as display space while a decision on long term use is pending.

Also Saturday, voters will consider a 1.75 percent cost of living raise for town officers; a $5,870 payment on the Squam Creek Preserve loan; and carrying forward $4,410 for the comprehensive plan committee’s costs including mapping, consulting, overlays and surveys.

The town website states Westport Volunteer Fire Department will have coffee, other beverages, doughnuts, sandwiches and hot dogs for sale at town meeting.

Voters re-elected Richardson and Road Commissioner Garry Cromwell June 11. They were unopposed on the ballot, Town Clerk Julie Casson said.
