Where will the money come from?

    Dear Editor:

I would like for the Wiscasset Board of Selectmen and the rest of the opponents to the MDOT Downtown & Route 1 Improvement Project to explain to the rest of us where the money will come from to do the necessary repairs to our sidewalks and infrastructure if MDOT does not move forward with Option 2.

Wiscasset's maintenance director has estimated the cost to repair downtown sidewalks will be in excess of $400,000. That figure does not include fixing the side streets issues. The sidewalks, steps, rails, etc. are in deplorable condition. It is a serious safety issue and not in compliance with the ADA. It is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

What is the plan for these necessary repairs?  Three selectmen and a small group of people have been very vocal about their opposition to the project, but, we have yet to hear from them their plan to fix the serious safety issues. If there is no plan, the only way to make the repairs is to raise property taxes.  We can only kick the can down the road for so long.

Please support the downtown and Route 1 improvements plan. Wiscasset residents cannot afford any more property tax increases!
