On Dec. 5, Wiscasset Historic Preservation Commission approved 3-0 a change to Wiscasset Public Library’s certificate of appropriateness for its roof, according to the YouTube video of the meeting. The COA had been approved for a standing seam metal roof, but the library had since collected donations for the project, and according to Director Pam Dunning, the library was able to afford tiles made of recycled rubber that resembled slate tiles.

Chair Susan Blagden was absent.

The commission took up a request for new signage for Camden Bank. According to Phil Boldoc, the bank’s plan was to install an internally lit sign that would give less light than the current uplit wooden sign. Commissioner Pam Logan said the historic preservation ordinance did not permit internally lit signs in the historic district. Boldoc said the bank was willing to not light the sign internally, but that the wooden sign had to be replaced because it was deteriorating.

He recommended a metal sign in lieu of the internally lit sign. Logan said the ordinance requires that things be replaced in kind, meaning a wooden sign would be required. The matter was tabled to a date to be determined.

Allan Tarrance of the Comprehensive Plan Committee presented a list of buildings deemed historically significant during the last comprehensive plan process, and asked WHPC for help looking over the inventory and adding or deleting buildings as needed. Vice chair Leslie Roberts said she would have to review the state’s requirements for what is a contributing and non-contributing structure. The group agreed to review the inventory and discuss some of the issues involved.
