Wind causing outages in Lincoln County

Thu, 04/24/2014 - 3:30pm

Although no wind warning was issued for Lincoln County, it was a close call, National Weather Service Meteorologist Andy Pohl said Thursday.

“In order to have a (wind advisory), you need to have sustained winds above 40 miles per hour for over two hours or a gust over 48,” he said. “The closest we came to that was 45 (miles per hour) in Portland.”

Instead, prepare for gusts of 35 to 45 miles per hour throughout the day, Pohl said.

“It looks like it will calm down by night and it should fall off by midnight,” he said.

There is a red flag warning in York County, however, as dry conditions and strong winds could be cause for brush fires spreading quickly, Pohl said.

There is a coastal advisory, however, as the strong winds continue to froth the waters.

Although 2014 has proven to be a dryer spring than average, it still pales to last year, Pohl said, when the amount of precipitation received was less than half of what was expected.

The wind has caused several trees to come down throughout the county, including one near Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta and on Route 129 in Bristol.

As of 1:30 p.m. there were 210 outages in Lincoln County, with 69 in Jefferson and 45 customers without power in Bristol.
