Wiscasset could cap bottle talks Tuesday

Board to consider policy for redeemables collections

An issue of interest to local nonprofits and those they serve could be resolved Oct. 21, as selectmen consider a bottle redemption policy. The topic arose from questions Selectman Bill Barnes raised about collection bins at the Wiscasset Transfer Station.

The policy is the board’s preliminary agenda for its meeting Tuesday night. The meeting at the municipal building starts at 7 p.m.

A draft version of the policy covers insurance issues and lets the town cancel its agreement with an organization over issues with collection or unsafe work habits; the organization would have a week to fix the issues before losing the agreement.

American Legion Post 54, one of the organizations that has collected bottles at the station, has expressed concern about the future of the practice that has aided the Post’s expenses.

Also on tap Tuesday is the petition the town has received for a referendum vote on the school committee’s decision to close Wiscasset Primary School.
