Wiscasset’s next police chief is former Paris (Maine) interim police chief Jeff Lange, Wiscasset Town Manager Marian Anderson announced.

Anderson made the announcement at a selectmen’s budget meeting Tuesday night. Lange starts May 23, Anderson said.

Wiscasset has had two interim chiefs sharing duties since Troy Cline resigned as chief earlier this spring.

According to a biography Anderson sent reporters later, Lange recently took a seven-week, police executive development course at Roger Williams University, and is close to finishing a bachelor of science degree in public safety management.

Lange has been a volunteer firefighter, a reserve officer, senior patrol officer, field training officer, emergency operations officer, basic instructor, defensive tactics instructor, criminal information unit detective, detective sergeant, and lieutenant, and has served in a special victims bureau, with a focus on abductions and sexual assault, according to the biography.

“ In 2008, Jeff ... was offered a position as a Law Enforcement Professional for the Department of Defense working directly for the 4th Battalion 101st Airborne concentrated on targeting Taliban members, and mentoring the local Afghan National Police Chief and Afghanistan Border Police’s Leadership,” the biography continues. “He completed his tour in Afghanistan and was asked to deploy again and was given a supervising role as the Chief of the Prosecution Task Force for Eastern Baghdad, Iraq working directly for the 2nd Brigade of the 10th Mountain Division.

“In 2011, he took a break from deploying and was given a mentoring position for the Counter Insurgency Targeting Program for the U.S. Army Intelligence and Targeting Officers in the United States. In a final and third tour, Jeff was asked to deploy once again to Afghanistan as a Counter Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) Instructor and prepared prosecution packets on terrorists and testified as a Subject Matter Expert in the Afghan Court System.”

Lange has been Paris’ interim chief since April 2015, the biography states.

His starting salary in Wiscasset is $63,000, Anderson said.
