Wiscasset’s Museum in the Streets™, the self-guided historical walking tour, is now available as a free mobile app. Download Wiscasset MITS from the Google Play or Apple stores. Narrated by Wiscasset native Margo Rafter Strong, the app contains additional historic photos and three new stops not available when the tour was first developed.

Wiscasset is a town filled with history, from the seventeenth century to the present. The tour tells the stories of that history. Whether you want to enjoy an outdoor walking experience or see new sights from inside your car, the GPS-enabled app allows you to set your own pace and decide how much of the tour you want to do. Each stop includes the story of the building or view, accompanied by historic photographs. Choose your own level of content, from basic information and images to additional stories and photos illustrating different time periods in the site’s history. Links in the app connect you to museums and the local Chamber of Commerce. If you prefer something physical to hold or refer to, there are 36 information panels throughout the village, many of which contain a brochure with a walking map.

The app was created by the Wiscasset’s Museum in the Streets™ volunteer committee working with Action Data Systems, ActionShow App. Ed Kavanagh, president of the committee, said: “This opportunity enables us to enhance our tour with a new voice and more of our wonderful photos, and to make the tour more accessible to visitors. Now you can choose how you want to take the tour. We had a great experience working with the ActionShow team.” ActionShow App Business Manager Ushma Shah said: "We were thrilled to work with the Wiscasset’s MITS committee to develop this wonderful walking tour mobile app. The mobile app tour allows visitors to Wiscasset to experience the town in a new light and to enrich their visit with a self-paced yet ‘guided’ experience. We were excited to work with the Wiscasset team to share your town's history and put Wiscasset on the map!"

Future enhancements to the app are under development by the team. The committee welcomes new members. Current members are Ed Kavanagh, Peggy Konitzky, Mary Ellen Barnes, Sue Robson, Ronn Orenstein and Margo Rafter Strong.
