Wiscasset plans Halloween, daffodils, holiday lights

Wed, 10/16/2019 - 8:30am

Wiscasset selectmen had holidays on their minds Tuesday.

The board approved closing Federal Street for the Halloween parade and block party, “Nightmare on Federal Street”; approved the planting of 1,000 daffodil bulbs by the Garden Club and interested volunteers Nov. 5, in honor of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage; and approved Terry Heller’s plans for holiday lights.

During public comment, people associated with Maine Art Gallery asked selectmen to renew the five-year lease. Town Manager John O’Connell said he would make sure the issue is on the next agenda. Susan Blagden praised members of Wiscasset Ambulance Service, which recently transported her to Mid Coast Hospital. She also discussed sending possible Historic Preservation Ordinance changes to the Ordinance Review Committee at the end of the month.

The flooring contract for the fire department went to H.T. Winters, low bidder with $6,193. The old flooring had to be removed because it contained asbestos. O’Connell said the pier policy needs to be firmed up soon. And selectmen will conduct a site walk at the Main Street Pier at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21. The public is welcome. And O’Connell said a public meeting on the ash pond cleanup project at Mason Station would probably take place in November.
