Wiscasset Senior Center: Disappointed by no-shows

Wed, 04/23/2014 - 1:00pm

Trustee Chairman Carl Hewitt announced at last Wednesday’s dinner that people will have to order and pre-pay for the prime rib scheduled for Wednesday, April 30. He said this was necessary because someone called the town office and asked what happens to all the prime rib that is ordered if people do not show up.

Supposedly this was a complaint about the February meal. However, that was pot roast, and the January meal was roast beef. Both were offered at the regular price and not the prime rib price. Supposedly there were 70 reservations and 20 no-shows. We will go back to that reservation list and contact those who did not show and ask them to consider making a donation at least.

This is so unfortunate. There have been some “no-shows” in the past — but few. Even then the meals have generally been sold. No matter what the meal, very little is thrown away. The various chefs over the years have been very cost conscious and have not wasted any food. In fact, the prime rib dinner planned in March was canceled on the previous Monday when the forecast was for a possible snowstorm. The storm did not materialize so a chicken dish was served.

The story of Senior Center members always eating prime rib and lobster started a few years ago when a couple of selectmen and budget committee members made comments about what was served, and how we ate better than the common residents. The comments were made during a budget hearing. Unfortunately, these people had never been to the Senior Center even though they had comments about the food served.

Lobster is served once a year and is generally served in September when we celebrate the founding of the Senior Center. Prime rib is served monthly at most and is served as a fundraiser. We generally make a profit on that meal.

It is sad that what we serve is still questioned. It seems to me that there is a lot of dissension in Wiscasset at this time. It seems that some are acting like those stories about the kids playing baseball: The one kid says that if he can’t bat first, he is going to take his bat and ball and go home.

We should be looking to work together and accept new ideas, not complain about what is served, or how the town meeting will be run or what school buildings will be used.

So much could be accomplished if we did work together. Think of the great schools, local government and Community/Senior Center we could have if we listened to each other and tried to arrive at a good solution. Let’s try it.

The next “Take Back Day” is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 and will be held at the Boothbay Harbor Town Office, Wiscasset Communications Center, Miles Hospital, Sproul Block in Waldoboro and the Sheepscot Valley Health Center in Coopers Mills from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you can’t get to a site and have medication to get rid of, please contact your local police department. There is also a disposal box in the entrance of the sheriff's office on Route 1.

The cribbage tournament winners on Tuesday, April 15 were Linden Simmons first, Duane Lewis second, Leol Corson third, Dot Kidney low score and David Grover had the high hand. The cribbage tournament winners on Thursday, April 17 were Jane LaBreck first, Dwight Lewis second, Dawn Sutter third, Luis Serrano low score and Duane Lewis had the high hand.
