Wiscasset Senior Center: Nathan Haley receives scholarship

Tue, 05/26/2015 - 1:45pm

The scholarship committee awarded Wiscasset High School senior Nathan Haley with a check for $1,000 to pursue additional education. The award was presented to Nathan at the Public Supper last Wednesday. Nathan’s mother, Lisa West, was in attendance. Ted Tracy from the scholarship committee presented the check to Nathan.

The Wiscasset Senior Center Scholarship Fund is a separate, independent nonprofit with close ties to the Wiscasset Senior Center. The fund awards a scholarship each year to a graduating Wiscasset High School senior looking to get additional training in a hands-on career. Money for the scholarships is raised from various fundraisers and donations. No Wiscasset Senior Center funds are used to support the fund.

“My overall career goal is to own an automotive repair shop,” Nathan wrote in his application. “I have chosen Central Maine Community College in Auburn for their Ford ASSET program. After talking to the many local garages, all have recommended the teachers and facility that CMCC has offer.”

Nathan goes on to say: “This scholarship would help me afford the costs of attending CMCC's Ford ASSET program, and will, in turn, allow me to upgrade the tools I will need to attend this special class. This scholarship will also help me afford two years of CMCC's business courses in addition to the two years of automotive courses. Both of these programs will help me become able to open my own automotive technician shop in the future.”

Nathan impressed the scholarship committee with his ability to express himself clearly regarding his future goals. He also impressed all at the dinner with his ability to interact with the audience and to assure the scholarship committee and all scholarship fund supporters that he was indeed grateful for the award. He also publicly thanked his mother for supporting his education from kindergarten through high school.

I’m sure Nathan will eventually reach his goal. He certainly exhibited that special ability to understand the audience (customer) and calmly and intelligently interact with them. He should go far.

Last Tuesday, Stuart Wyman had that cribbage hand of cribbage hands: a 29. This is the hand with four 5s and the right Jack. I was not there Tuesday but I did see a couple of pictures of the hand. Unfortunately there were no pictures of Stuart holding the hand. Perhaps his hands were shaking too much. I’m sure he was excited, but all reports said he was “cool” about the whole thing. Congratulations, Stuart.

The cribbage tournament winners on May 19 were Barbara Chubbuck first, Jane LaBreck second, Howard Nickerson third, Larry Clark and Betty Sawyer tied for low score and Stuart Wyman had the high hand of 29! The cribbage tournament winners on May 21 were Dwight Lewis and Stuart Wyman tied for first, Linden Simmons third, Patty Bridgham low score and Sally Sherman had the high hand.

The next Public Supper, Wednesday, June 3, will feature stuffed chicken. Please call 207-882-8230 at least two days in advance for meal reservations.
