Wiscasset Senior Center: Nita Greenleaf is new chef

Wed, 07/23/2014 - 1:00pm

Last Wednesday the public supper was cooked by Nita Greenleaf. She is the second of the two chefs trying out for the position of Wiscasset Senior Center Chef for the next year. The chef or “Cook” is a contract position with the contract running the fiscal year of July through June. The position is not that of an employee of the Senior Center or Community Center or town. Basically the contract is set up to prepare a number of meals at a fixed price per meal.

The supper started with the usual soup and salad. The soup was corn chowder and had bits of bacon. It was very good. The entrée was chicken breast with a seasoned coating and was served with creamed onions and mashed potatoes. The chicken was moist and quite tasty. The creamed onions were a nice touch. I’ve always liked creamed onions, so for me that was just great. For dessert Nita made a lemon pudding cake that was a perfect end to a very good meal.

To me there was no clear winner in comparing the last two meals. Both chefs did an excellent job. Both chefs prepared the type of meal that I would consider “typical Senior Center style” meals. Thanks to both chefs, Debby Virgin and Nita Greenleaf, for preparing excellent meals.

After the meal each dinner was given a paper ballot to indicate which meal they liked the best. Later the trustees met and with the ballots as guidance, awarded the contract to Nita Greenleaf. Hopefully we will soon have a menu for the month of August.

At the special trustee meeting after the public supper, the trustees elected Carl Hewitt as chairman, Dale Wenners as vice chairman, Bill Mahoney as treasurer and Gail Burke and Cyndy Lewis as co-secretaries for the new fiscal year. The officers will meet once a month after a Wednesday dinner and the entire board will meet once a quarter. The committees will be responsible for getting the day-to-day work done.

The cribbage tournament winners on Tuesday, July 15 were Marge Pooler first, Joan Grondin and Linden Simmons tied for second, Ken Colby low score and Ken Colby had the high hand. The cribbage tournament winners on Thursday, July 17 were Dick Barnardfirst, David Greenleaf second, Reid Hodgdon third, Patty Bridgham low score and Patty Bridgham had the high hand.

It is interesting to note just how “crazy” cards can run in cribbage. Note that in the scores from last week at each tournament the high hand was won by the same person winning low score. The high hand was a 24 in both instances, in fact Patty had two 24 hands over the course of the evening. For those of you not familiar with cribbage it means that for at least one hand the unusual combination of cards came along to give the player one of the higher hand values in the game. But on the other side, low score means that the cards were “against you” most of the time giving the player low hand values. Now that makes for fun!
