Wiscasset Senior Center: Public supper and Senior Appreciation Day

Tue, 10/21/2014 - 10:30am

Nita Greenleaf, the Wiscasset Senior Center chef, prepared and served her first prime rib dinner last Wednesday. As you would expect, Nita was a bit apprehensive about preparing an entrée she has not done before, but all reports were that the diners enjoyed the dinner. There were close to 60 who attended.

The Wednesday night dinner is billed as a public supper in that anyone is welcome to make a reservation, but reservations are necessary especially for a more expensive type meal such as prime rib. All Wiscasset Senior Center members get a discount on most of the dinners. Walk-ins are welcome to come and see if there are any seats remaining but if you do not have a reservation you may be turned away.

Because there are no lunches anymore, leftovers become a problem and a very big expense. In order to keep the price low, only the necessary amount of food is purchased. Please help us out by making reservations and canceling them when you cannot make it.

The 14th annual Lincoln County TRIAD Senior Appreciation Day held last Saturday was a huge success. There were somewhere around 200 people in attendance. We did get the count mixed up a bit but we were sure that everyone had a good time. I think the most popular of the vendor booths were the Free Flu Shot Clinic booth put on by the Lincoln County Healthcare and the Rick Gilde Massage Therapy booth that offered free massages.

Then there was the free lunch. Each person got a heaping plate of hot dogs, baked beans, fresh fruit salad, pasta salad and coleslaw. Later, dishes containing a brownie with a large scoop of ice cream and hot chocolate sauce were delivered right to the diner. It doesn’t get better than that!

The keynote speaker was the Damariscotta Police Chief Ron Young. He talked about how to stay safe by avoiding scams, properly using and disposing of prescription drugs and taking steps to prevent burglars from targeting your home. But what I thought was the most important part of his talk was his statement that he, along with most of the law enforcement people, is there to serve the community. Of all the police officers that have been in my family or who I have gotten to know, all have had a passion to serve the community. Their job is not easy. They have to have the passion to serve and to follow the law but emotions have to be held in check. Not all wrongs can be righted and you can only do what you can do by law. So even though it was a Senior Appreciation Day it was also a time for many police officers to serve and mingle with the “good guys.” It is nice when everyone present is wearing a “white hat.”

The cribbage tournament winners on Tuesday, Oct. 14 were Arlene Steen first, Reid Hodgdon second, Ken Colby third, Ron Bodge low score and Stuart Wyman had the high hand. The cribbage tournament winners on Thursday, Oct. 16 were Ron Bodge first, Marge Pooler second, Earl Dighton and Reid Hodgdon tied for third, Dick Barnard low score and June Caton had the high hand.
