Wiscasset Senior Center: Reserve your spot for prime rib dinner

Fri, 11/28/2014 - 11:00am

The following was written by former Senior Center Trustee Ellie Tracy.

“Not long ago, I had the opportunity to sit down with Bill and Lynn Maloney, some of our newest members who live in Wiscasset, in a home that was a bed and breakfast. Shortly after taking up residency, imagine their surprise when they answered a knock on the door to find folks looking for a room for the night.

“In June, Bill was elected to the Senior Center of Wiscasset, board of trustees, and his fellow board members quickly recognized his talent with numbers. Bill had attended the New England School of Accounting and has now taken on the job of Senior Center treasurer. He replaces our former treasurer, Dale Wenners, who plans to go into full retirement and travel with husband, Ron, and their family pets. The responsibilities of such an office are a perfect fit for a man who recently retired from VIFAN, USA, after many years of service as their director of sales. Among his many past volunteer services, he served as the former chairman of the village of Wheeling, Illinois, planning commission.

“In addition to his WSC volunteer work, he is presently involved with several other community organizations including the Knights of Columbus, where he serves as their financial secretary, and as the founder and counselor for the Job Club Ministry, offering assistance to those who are unemployed or under employed. Although a Ministry of All Saint’s Parish, the program is open to all who need assistance in their job search.

“Bill grew up in Rutland, Massachusetts. And shared a childhood experience that few of us have had. A tornado completely destroyed the family home, all survived the life-threatening storm, and Bill, age 12, who was riding his bike around the neighborhood, was suddenly snatched from it (danger) and rushed to safety.

“Lynn and Bill enrolled in the Wiscasset Senior Center a year ago as a point of getting acquainted with folks in their new community. At the same time, Bill was invited to join the Duffers Bowling League, and when someone inquired about his average, he responded, ‘My bowling average looks like a golf score, and my golf score looks like a bowling score.’ His sense of humor will get your attention whenever you have an opportunity to chat with him.

“Lynn, a native of Clinton, Massachusetts, has been able to continue her work as a consultant for Intelligent Medical Objects (IMO), and serves as the one who takes and transcribes the minutes of each meeting. Meetings are held through a computer program called GoToMeeting. Lynn has become actively involved in her church as a member of the Shamrocks, and recently she stepped up to join the Wiscasset Female Charitable Society. There is one other friend in their home whose name is Bradley III.

“As we brought our conversation to a close, I asked Bill if he had any thoughts about the Wiscasset Senior Center, and he said the idea of the trustees working by using a ‘team’ approach in their leadership roles is of interest to him.”
