Wiscasset Senior Center

A big thank you goes out to all those members who lend a helping hand at the Senior Center. Steve is one of those who help each week by selling the 50-50 raffle tickets. Steve gladly sells the “winning ticket” to everyone who asks for a “winner.” Steve says he gets little recognition from the members he serves each week and has never gotten a tip from any of those whom he has sold the “winning ticket.”

All kidding aside, Steve and all those who have sold the tickets over the years have done a great job. Their good humor and friendly exchanges have added to the overall enjoyment of the evenings. The income the Senior Center receives has never been that much but every little bit helps. The proceeds from one raffle each month goes to the Scholarship Fund, and that group appreciates the help.

Two weeks ago Bob Johnson handed out a sheet titled “September is Preparedness Month.” The main theme is that everyone should be prepared to help themselves if a natural or man-made disaster occurs. We all tend to think that “things” don’t happen here in Maine and if something did happen, then help and/or family and friends are just a cell phone call or text away.

But what if cell towers are down? The bottom line is that you need to be able to survive for at least three days on your own. If you had to move quickly to an emergency shelter could you do it? Do you know where the shelters are? Do you know what to take? Bob’s sheet highlights the major things that should be in your disaster kit. Planning what to do and being prepared may save your life.

In the past, the Lincoln County Triad, the Wiscasset Police Department and the Sagadahoc County Triad have presented information about being prepared. Those groups have suggested having a “Go Bag.” It would contain medications, water, snack food and books that would be rotated on a regular basis to keep everything fresh. For instance the water could be used for houseplants weekly and then the containers refilled. Having a copy of your “file-of-life” in the bag is also a good idea.

The local Police, the Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency, the Fire Department and other groups review “what if” situations and plan strategies to address them. The police department is there to keep you safe, provide notification of emergencies and provide routes and directions for evacuation if necessary. The Wiscasset Community Center is an emergency shelter and is pet friendly. They work with the Lincoln County Animal Shelter to provide assistance to all coming to the shelter with pets.

Be prepared. If you missed picking up one of Bob’s sheets, just talk to him. I’m sure he could get you one.

Some may think it a small thing but Nancy did pour water for all those sitting at her table last Wednesday. To all those sitting at that table it was a big deal and greatly appreciated.

The cribbage tournament winners on Tuesday, Sept. 9 were Dick Barnard first, Marge Pooler second, Earl Dighton third and Ann Merry had the low score. The cribbage tournament winners on Thursday, Sept. 11 were Ann Merry first, Robbie Greenleaf second, Cindy Douglass third, Gail Thayer low score and Luis Serrano had the high hand.
