When Deb Schaffer first heard about the Feed Our Scholars program in Wiscasset to help food-insecure children, she was moved to tears, she said.

Until then, she hadn’t realized that there were local children not getting enough to eat. “In this idyllic little town, I didn’t think there could be that kind of a problem. It shook me.”

Schaffer keeps a Feed Our Scholars brochure and donation jar at the counter inside her business, DebraElizabeths at 78 Main Street. And she has just come up with an additional way she and the business’ customers can help.

From Nov. 27 through Dec. 24, Schaffer is making all the hanging clothing 30 percent off, and donating 5 percent of the sale money to Feed Our Scholars. “It’s a little thing that I can do to help,” Schaffer said in an interview Nov. 20.

“Wow! How wonderful of her,” Feed Our Scholars Chairman Gretchen Burleigh-Johnson writes in a Nov. 21 email response to the Wiscasset Newspaper. “She’s been a supporter from the beginning, and it’s lovely to see her dedicate some of her Christmas season profits to support the area’s food insecure kids.”

Schaffer also hopes the fundraising aspect of the sale will encourage people to spend their shopping dollars locally. That’s how towns and businesses are able to flourish, she said; that, and buying American, something else she is a big believer in, she added.
