Wiscasset waterfront needs selectmen's attention

Tue, 05/30/2017 - 9:00am

    Dear Editor:

Wiscasset desperately needs continued economic growth to keep it from being a drive-through town of prohibitively high taxes. We have seen the wonderful development of five new shops downtown in the last two years. Yet our biggest asset, our waterfront, has seen far less growth. It could provide substantial income for the village just by expanding what we already have for public docking. Over time, further development of marine facilities would follow, as it has in Belfast, to include marine and boater’s supplies and possibly a small marina that is in keeping with the village’s character. This would bring much needed foot-traffic (with no automobile traffic) and revenue to the downtown area. Unfortunately, we have lost our existing pump-out station due to disuse and neglect. Nothing is worse than a missed opportunity.

We need to become more involved as stakeholders in our town and make our voices and choices heard. As we vote in two new selectmen who will make decisions for us, a careful consideration of experience, passion for this town, a prudent spending policy and the ability to communicate across groups is critical. Katherine Martin-Savage, 37-year resident, has these qualities. She suggested developing the waterfront years ago and as selectman will put her remarkable energy into making it happen. Please vote for action by voting for Katherine Martin-Savage on June 13.
