Wiscasset works to rent Peregrine’s former airport space

The upstairs office space at Wiscasset Municipal Airport brought in $900 a month when Peregrine Turbine Technologies was renting it. The business moved to former Point East lots in October and, as the new year rolls out, the town is looking to further market the space.

Town officials on Jan. 12 were optimistic the terminal’s two rental suites, at a combined 900-plus square feet, will not remain vacant for long. People look in winter and act in spring, Town Manager Marian Anderson said. “I think we’re on target. I think the right person or company will come along.”

In separate interviews, Anderson, Airport Manager Frank Costa and Town Planner Ben Averill cited two selling points, both regarding location. “It’s an opportunity not to be missed,” Averill said. The airport on Chewonki Neck Road is about half a mile from Route One; and being at an airport would make sense for either an aviation-related business or a business that wants air transport for goods or supplies, the officials said.

“That would be excellent, too. That would increase aircraft traffic,” Costa said about air transport. However, all three officials said the town would welcome any prospects for a tenant. “We don’t have pre-conceived ideas of what that might be,” Anderson said.

After Peregrine announced plans to leave, Costa had raised the idea of bringing in a flight school business. In the new interview, he said he still likes that idea. But whoever takes the space, he’ll be glad for the town to be making money off it again. He said the bills are still getting paid, but every month the space is vacant, that’s less revenue coming in.

“(The department) is not going to be in the red, but it’s going to make a difference,” Costa said about the lack of a lease. “I just don’t know exactly what that difference is.”

The town is seeking the same $900 a month rent it was getting, Averill said. Because there are two suites, there’s the potential for two tenants instead of one, he said. One suite is 613 square feet; the other, 355, according to Averill, who gained experience marketing properties while he worked for Avesta Housing in Portland.

So far, the space is being pitched on the airport website at wiscassetairport.com. Averill said plans are under way to also advertise it on the town’s home site, wiscasset.org and in newspapers.

The wiscassetairport.com listing reads in part, “Excellent location and easily accessible by car or aircraft.”
