Woolwich hires new tax collector

Kim Dalton recently joined the Woolwich town office staff as tax collector. Her other duties include serving as deputy town clerk and general assistance coordinator.

Dalton comes qualified. She most recently served as deputy tax collector for Monmouth where she lives. Prior to that, she was Gardiner’s tax collector.

Dalton hasn’t always called Maine home. She moved here from Millikin, Colorado in 2003. Millikin is a rural community of about 5,600 in the northern part of the state.

She said she doesn’t mind her daily 40- to 45-minute commute from Monmouth to Woolwich.

“I was looking for a change and happy to be working so much closer to the coast,” she told the Wiscasset Newspaper.

Her primary responsibility as tax collector is collecting both property and personal taxes. Dalton said both are based on the fiscal year, not the calendar one. Like many other communities, Woolwich’s fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30. Two important dates for residents to remember are Oct. 1 and April 30 when the first and second property tax payments are due.

Any unpaid property taxes are subject to a 7 percent interest fee as approved by voters at the annual town meeting. She said the lien filing date is usually in August but letters notifying property owners of unpaid taxes are sent from the town office in July.

Dalton added other taxes collected by the town include personal property taxes and excise tax on vehicles of all types, including cars, trucks, ATVs, boats, snowmobiles and trailers. Revenues from excises taxes remain in town and are put towards the yearly tax commitment.

Dalton is excited about her new job and serving the Woolwich community. The select board is pleased to have her onboard. “Her very first day, Monday, March 19, she was waiting on customers at the window,” said Chairman David King Sr. “She came to us very well-qualified and proficient in Trio, the computer software we use.”

    The tax collector’s hours at the town office are: Monday and Tuesday 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Thursday 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and Friday 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
