Woolwich nods land transfer talks

Woolwich voters on Monday passed a two-part question authorizing the select board to negotiate the transfer of the former town landing property off George Wright Road to residents Matt and Amy Richard. The special town meeting was held in the historic 1832 Meeting House at the junction of Old Stage and Dana Mills roads.

The Richards were among a dozen voters who turned out. The transfer of the landlocked property near Nequasset Brook was the only article on the warrant. John Chapman served as moderator.

Select board chairman David King Jr. said the article’s approval doesn’t define what the town is transferring. “It’s giving the select board the authority to begin the negotiation process,” he explained.

King added the board will need help developing a legal description of the 1.1-acre property. Most of it is off the east side of the brook. Bath Water District has a deeded easement across it to access its dam. At the annual town meeting in April, voters discontinued town ownership of the small bridge and gravel road. The Richards own the property the bridge serves. The former town landing abuts the rear of their land off Barley Neck Road.

At the outset of Monday's meeting, King noted the annual one was held in the historic meetinghouse until 1951. Then the meeting was moved to the elementary school.

At their regular meeting following the town meeting, selectmen agreed to begin advertising for bids to begin ADA improvements at Nequasset Park.

Five bid packages on an industrial washing machine were turned over to the fire chief and EMS director for review and their recommendation. Prior to the start of their next meeting, selectmen will review bids for a new security system for the municipal building.

The board appointed Evan Holbrook to the Road Committee; Michael Field, Planning Board; Arlene Whitney, Agricultural/Forest Resources; Paul Goscinski, Conservation Committee; Jonathan Appleyard, Solid Waste & Recycling Committee; and Caelie Smith, Communications Committee.

Terry MacGregor was reappointed animal control officer and Jon Hentz shellfish warden.

A memorial service will be held for longtime resident Jean Brigance at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 23 at the Wiscasset Yacht Club.
