Woolwich pedestrian tunnel gets makeover

The Woolwich pedestrian tunnel in the town’s center got a much needed facelift recently thanks to the assistance of the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department and community service volunteers. The tunnel, which passes under Route 1 and is adjacent to the Woolwich Veterans Memorial monument at Tanner Square, had been vandalized with graffiti and was a cause of concern for the local citizens and businesses in the area.

With the support of the select board, Town Administrator Suzette Cloutier coordinated with Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Fleck to use the Two Bridges Regional Jail’s community service personnel to completely repaint the interior walls. Resident Jim Gabor said their effort “has done wonders for the appearance.” He added that local residents and businesses are grateful for the prompt actions of the Select board.

Additionally, Selectman Allison Hepler has reached out to the Woolwich Central School art teacher, Laura Devin, and students who have volunteered to paint artwork on this blank “canvas” early next spring. Hepler is looking forward to this project, and is “excited to see what the students come up with.”

To further enhance security, selectmen had the lighting repaired and agreed to install security cameras on both sides of the tunnel. This action will be completed this month with the help of Selectman Jason Shaw.
