Work on Alna sand/salt shed continues

More improvements are on the horizon for Alna’s salt and sand shed, as the town continues working to extend the building’s life. A number of paid and volunteer efforts are finished, and another round of paid work is planned.

The 25-year-old shed off Route 218 has been plagued with rust and other issues, but, if it gets the attention it needs, it could last another 25 to 30 years, town officials said.

On July 12, the Alna Selectmen voted to add a plywood partition to the shed’s back wall, similar to a plywood section recently added to a corner. That earlier job took $892 in materials and labor, by Clear Pine Carpentry, Chris Cooper and David Seigars.

The work on the back wall should also take less than $1,000 to complete, Cooper said.

The Selectmen will send a thank you letter to Dale Warner of D.V. Warner Carpentry in Alna for donating both the materials and labor to put a protective coating on the building’s interior.

The money for this year’s paid projects is coming from a maintenance account for the shed.

In March, town meeting voters moved $14,500 – set aside years ago to help Wiscasset buy an ambulance – into a fund to replace or renovate the shed.
