Peregrine Turbine Technologies looks to grow, in Wiscasset
Thirteen years in, Peregrine Turbine Technologies, LLC, 29 South Point Drive on Wiscasset's Birch Point, is eying expansion.
"Peregrine plans to purchase the properties to create an Energy R&D (research and development) Campus in support of company efforts to produce breakthrough electric power production equipment that enables carbon-free baseload power including geothermal and other types," Chief Executive Officer and co-founder David Stapp told Wiscasset Newspaper Monday in an email response to questions.
"Demand for Peregrine’s technology has skyrocketed in recent months and the company is poised for very strong growth. We desire to make Wiscasset a contender in the competition to produce jobs and new technology in this sector," Stapp explained.
Wiscasset Newspaper was asking because the company is on selectmen's agenda for Tuesday night.
Town Manager Dennis Simmons tells selectmen in his manager's report posted at wiscasset.gov ahead of the meeting, Stapp "will make a presentation on a proposal for Peregrine to develop a portion of the town-owned property ... Please bear in mind, this land is tax-acquired property and the Selectboard has the authority to dispose of it, however, its sale and disposal must follow the newly updated (state law). Any proposal should be subject to a legal review to ensure the town complies with the statute."
Tuesday's presentation will not be the first public mention of Peregrine's idea for a research and development project in town. Stapp and Peregrine's Larry Legree attended a Nov. 12, 2024 stakeholder workshop with town officials and others, on priorities for development in the Birch Point and Old Ferry Road areas, according to a Nov. 20, 2024 memo of "takeaways" from the workshop in Wiscasset Senior Center. The memo, at wiscasset.gov, reads in part: "Peregrine expressed support for more light industry at Birch Point, which could include their own research and development (R & D) and test lab facility expansions."
And then a March 28 memo on a March 12 workshop at Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission in Wiscasset noted "Peregrine ... believes geothermal will be a big source of renewable energy in Maine in the near future." That memo, at wiscasset.gov, also separately notes "the term light industry is consistent with the Town's zoning for Birch Point ..."
Tuesday's selectboard meeting at the town office and via Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89949074298?pwd=UllSQTRtd1RqQ1YvSEV5T0l6UWNsQT09 starts at 6 p.m.
Also on the agenda are seven business license requests. Simmons notes in his report, he cannot recall seeing so many of those in one meeting. "(Their) having met all of the criteria, (I) recommend approval for all and welcome them to Wiscasset." The applicants are Chase Small Craft, 121 Brown Road; Soap Lite, LLC, 29 Pinewood Drive; Final Limited Motorsports, 519 Gardiner Road; Midcoast Creative Studio, 72 Main St.; Uncle Sean's Fish 'N Chips, 770 Bath Road; Calling your Wild Astrology, 54 Old Sheepscot Road; and ZBON Fitness, 681 Bath Road.
