Question 2. Why was BRMF formed?

The Boothbay Region Maritime Foundation was formed in the fall of 2018 when concerns over the rapid rate of development on the east side were raised. A small group of fishermen, teachers, and businessmen met to discuss the best way to ensure that local fishing culture be preserved, shared, and secured for the future. After researching several options and visiting the Holbrook Community Foundation in Cundy’s Harbor the group decided to form a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization because it afforded the best options for a lasting impact on commercial working waterfront protection and education.

Prior to 2019, the Maritime District started at the footbridge and continued to Brown’s Wharf. After a public vote in May of 2019, the Working Waterfront District was reduced to four commercial properties that include the town fish pier, the old Boothbay Harbor Fisherman’s Co-op Association, Carter’s Wharf (formerly the Sea Pier), and the Boothbay Lobster Company. The Boothbay Region Maritime Foundation, is working to rebuild two of these properties, half of the newly formed working waterfront district.
