Damariscove’s Maypole Dance: America’s First Maypole and How We Differed from Puritan Massachusetts.

with Chip Griffin

$10

Discover another side of America’s very first Maypole Dance on Damariscove Island in 1622 and how Damariscove fared far better with their maypole than raucous Merry Mount, now Quincy, in colonial Massachusetts.  We will also compare maypole traditions in early twentieth century Maine as related to Chip by our one and only Curt West, who grew up downeast in Steuben, Maine.  The class will touch on connections between maypoles and town meetings as well as some of our more ancient English maypole roots in the 1300s.  This is a precursor to our 400th anniversary of America’s first maypole dance, just four years from now.
