Barbara Nowack Carswell Hinckley Winslow Williams died at home June 14, 2018.

She was born on April 27, 1924 in Bar Harbor, Maine to Hazel and Carl Nowack. She graduated from Bar Harbor High School with high honors and attended New England Deaconess School of Nursing in Boston, Massachusetts for two years.

Barbara married William K. Carswell on August 21, 1944 and they had five children. On termination of that marriage, she married Thomas G. Hinckley, then Gordon B. Winslow, and last Ralph S. Williams, all of whom predeceased her.

Barbara enjoyed traveling with her husbands but she was happiest when she was in the big red house at the end of School Street in East Boothbay, surrounded by family. Christmas and Thanksgivings were always big family events at her house. She was a member of the Boothbay Harbor Congregational Church and the St. Andrews Hospital Auxiliary where she volunteered for many years. She enjoyed doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, knitting mittens, and play Bridge with her friends.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Alfred B. Sherman III, and her sister, Francis N. Dean.

She is survived by her five children: Christina C. Maurer and her partner Robert MacMillian of East Boothbay; Caren A. Minzy of Boothbay; Charles D. Carswell of Lewiston; Coralie C. Sherman of Peaks Island, and Catherine C. Berger and husband Steven Berger of Boothbay Harbor. Barbara leaves five grandchildren: Jeremy W. Sherman of Peaks Island; Jessica C. Sherman of Portland; Morgan Maurer of Eugene, Oregon; Sarah Caine and her husband Keith of Kittery; and Amanda Katsaros and her husband Alex of North Andover, Massachusetts. She is survived by three great-grandchildren: Brodie and Camryn Caine and Theodore Katsaros. She also leaves nephew Guy Torrey and wife Marty; niece Stephanie Simmons and husband Bill; and cousin Lawrence Johnston.

There will be a private service for the family. Thank you to Barbara’s wonderful caregivers: Cindy Lewis, Ellen Brown, Shani Bryer, Wendy Wood and Susie LaPlaca.
