    Dear Editor:

Yesterday (June 2) the town of Wiscasset Selectman did a great disservice to our deceased veterans, historical figures and the town itself. The fence, surrounding the Ancient Cemetery was taken down around one of the most historical cemeteries in the United States. There are stones there from the early 1700s. Responses will be that it was “unsafe” and that simply is not true. I walk by the cemetery every day and is was solid. Admittedly in disrepair but solid and in no danger of falling down.

Already we saw a dog urinating on a gravestone …could we have done a worse thing in our little town than to disrespect the dead ?

What is more irritating is that this removal was not even passed by the Cemetery Committee that is in charge of approving this type of action. While the committee was working on a replacement it will be 3-4 months before it is approved and contractors selected.

A hope this is not a case of a politician wanting to accomplish a private agenda as this action certainly smacks of it.
