Westport Island Column

Dreaming of a warmer climate

Thu, 01/31/2013 - 6:15pm

OK, who’s dreaming of those Florida beaches now? Hoping we’ve skated through without too many heating, plumbing, or car-starting problems.

Thursday is the last day in January, and our town clerk is eager to see you if your canine friends aren’t yet licensed. You know the good reasons why, and unfortunately a late fee of $25 will be added beginning Friday, Feb. 1. The town clerk's hours on Thursday are 10 a.m. to noon.

This weekend, four Westport residents will be climbing the stairs with full fire fighting turnout gear at One Boston Place, raising funds for the American Lung Association. The Westport Island team of Paul, Jason Abbott, and Libby Mooney, is sponsored by our fire department and the Lincoln County Fire Chiefs Association.

They’ll probably start their climb Saturday afternoon, along with Angie Calvo of the Portland Fire Department team. There’s still time to donate, please get in touch with Paul, Jason, Libby or Angie, or go online to the American Lung Association (www.lung.org), and search for the Boston Climb and Westport Island Fire Department Team. Some Westport friends are heading down to cheer everyone on, so have fun carbo-loading, much luck, steady breathing, and thank you!

One of the most enduring memories of elementary school art class was probably the Valentines made for mom, grandma and friends. Not sure what we used the most of – paper lace doilies or Elmer’s glue? It’s great fun, no matter how young or crafty we are, to show people how special they are on Valentine’s Day.

Nancy Shaul and the Westport Community Association welcome residents and friends to come to the Town Hall Saturday, February 9, from 10 a.m. to noon. Card stock, trimmings, encouragement, and a bit of direction will be provided by the energetic and very creative Nancy Shaul and WCA friends.

If you have scissors, glue sticks, colored pens or pencils, buttons, glitter, ribbon, or flower catalogues to cut up, please bring what you can – not required, but helpful! The Community Association is making this definitely an enjoyable morning with refreshments, cookies to decorate, and door prizes. Give Nancy a call at 207-751-0567 if you’re planning to come, or just stop in.

Happy to see new flowers on my African violet. What’s blossoming on your windowsill?  Email me with news at mewbarnes2@yahoo.com or call 207-882-6055.
