‘Enchanted April’ opens this weekend
River Company presents Matthew Barber’s “Enchanted April” this weekend, Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28 and Friday, May 3-5 at Skidompha Public Library, 184 Main St., Damariscotta.
Some of you out there may have seen the film made in 1991 that starred Miranda Richardson, Joan Plowright, Alfred Molina and Jim Broadbent. If not, here’s the plot: In post World War I London, two housewives, who look like widows, but aren't, dream of escaping rainy England and their unhappy marriages. They read an advert in the London Times, and decide a vacation under the Mediterranean sun, surrounded by wisteria, is just the ticket! The two ladies invite two other women to join them, a wealthy widow consumed with "remembering," and a sad socialite, desperate for a reason to live. Just as they begin to understand one another, the husbands and one very eligible bachelor arrive on the scene. Providing comic relief: the Italian housekeeper. There will be partial male nudity in one of those comic relief moments!
The exceptional River Arts cast guarantees a great theater experience: Cally Green, Mallory Adams, Kim Fletcher-Smith, Allison Eddyblouin, Christine Andersen, Mike Lee, Nick Azzaretti, Bill Burleson and Betsy Terrell.
Performances are 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 26 and May 3; Saturday, April 27 and May 4 at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, April 28 and May 5 at 3 p.m. Make reservations by calling 207-687-8150 or visit http://www.rivercompany.org.
It’s a great April weekend for a bit of enchantment, don’t you think?
