Friends of Wiscasset Village

End of construction celebration on hold until spring

Thu, 10/10/2019 - 8:45pm

Friends of Wiscasset Village on Oct. 10 discussed plans including festivals, shopping events and streetscape amenities, including discussing how they will be maintained and who will be responsible.

The group postponed its tentatively planned “orange barrel festival” pushing it back to spring, due to the busy fall and winter schedule and because construction hasn’t quite ended, owing to weather. Instead of a focus on the end of construction, the focus will be on the new downtown, including wide sidewalks, plantings and new businesses.

The Wiscasset Farmer’s Market is extending its season until Dec. 15 with an indoor market at Morris Farm’s barn Thursdays from 2 to 5 p.m., with a special one the day before Thanksgiving.

The group agreed to speak to selectmen soon about issues such as snow removal, decisions about who is responsible for some of the street amenities, including plantings, flags, or banners, and tables and benches. Brad Sevaldson of BIRCH said there are no ordinances for issues about how far from buildings outdoor sales racks can be placed. The group also wants to discuss town plans for parking, including the Treats parking lot, which needs to be repaved and striped, and whether or not downtown parking will remain free.

Merchants said they hope to remain open extra hours during Gardens Aglow, and have specials.

Members discussed a statewide plan to plant daffodils in honor of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage. The town plans to plant 1,000 King Alfred daffodils in public spaces Nov. 5, but the Garden Club of Wiscasset hopes many more daffodils will be planted in front of businesses and homes.

The group meets next at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 15 at Sarah’s Cafe.
