Gingerbread Spectacular planning underway
The historic Opera House in Boothbay Harbor is beginning to deck the halls for the upcoming holiday season and the sweetly anticipated Gingerbread Spectacular. Each December dozens of uniquely designed small and large gingerbread structures are created in kitchens throughout the regions and delivered to the Opera House in time to be judged during the Dough Ball festivities in advance of the fun spirited public exhibit during the Gingerbread Spectacular.
The dates and times and details for this year’s Opera House Gingerbread Spectacular include:
Right Now – design and construction of sweetly edible houses and cottages, castles and cabins, bridges and boats and more begins. Each year dozens of gingerbread structures are fashioned by novices and more seasoned bakers, with the hope of being crowned 2018’s Most Spectacular. The rules for construction are simple, while not everything has to be made of gingerbread, it all must be edible. Exceptions are made for the addition of small lights and/or motors as part of an otherwise edible entry. Those interested in creating an entry for this year’s Gingerbread Spectacular are urged to call the Opera House by Dec. 12 to register, 633-6855.
Friday, Dec. 14 – the panel of judges convene to determine the Most Creative, Most Hilarious, Best Youth Entry, Most Delicious Looking, Best Representation of a Local landmark, the Best Traditional Gingerbread House Design and the grand prize of Most Spectacular. All entries receive tickets to the Dough Ball party & Awards Ceremony. Prize winners receive gift certificates for future Opera House performances and bragging rights! Due to rampant reports of bribing, the judges names will be announced at a later date.

The entire weekend of confectionery craziness is sponsored by the sweet folks at The First National Bank. Without their support, the Gingerbread Spectacular would be smaller, duller, perhaps just ordinary, but with their support it sparkles.
