Hope the group succeeds

Dear Editor:

While I applaud the group of people who want to add amenities to the “downtown” area of Wiscasset, it seems like some of the things are carryovers of things that have been discussed before but never done. I sincerely hope the group succeeds in their mission and gets the support it needs.  The things mentioned would greatly enhance the area and maybe help to make Wiscasset a destination rather than a pass-thru.

However, a transportation center was proposed years ago, a study undertaken, but again no follow thru. Certainly if that had been done by the filtration plant, it would have provided a real train station, bus station, restrooms, information center, and more badly needed parking. All things that would benefit Wiscasset.

I’m also not sure why this group seems to be doing what the Chamber should be doing, promoting Wiscasset. Isn’t that one of the reasons the group formed?  The Chamber should be doing all these things that are being mentioned all the time, and have a visible presence that the Chamber is behind all of this. Again, I give a lot of credit to the people who have a vision that could benefit the town, and are trying to do something about it.

I read in Down East magazine about small towns in Maine that have done necessary things to keep their towns vibrant and welcoming especially in tough times. Times might not be tough in Wiscasset, but much could be learned.
