LCCT’s next production: ‘Steel Magnolias’

One matinee at 2 on Dec. 14

With laughter through tears, Lincoln County Community Theater (LCCT), the theater company in residence at Damariscotta’s Lincoln Theater,  shares how the bonds of female friendship can help us wade through life’s hardest times in “Steel Magnolias,” playing Dec 12-14 for four performances only.

Written in just 10 days as a tribute to his sister Susan,  playwright Robert Harling examines the relationships between a tight-knit group of southern ladies in a small-town beauty parlor, who witness the milestones in each other’s lives. The play is alternately hilarious and touching — and, in the end, deeply revealing of the strength and purposefulness which underlies the antic chatter of its characters.

In Chinquapin, Louisiana anybody who is anybody gets their hair done at Truvy’s (Nanette Hennig Frazer) beauty salon. With the help of her new assistant Annelle (Christina Belknap), Truvy dispenses the hottest hair dos and advice to southern ladies like rich curmudgeon, Ouiser (Suzanne Rankin), eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee (Nina Tilander), a local social worker, M’Lynn (Jennifer True), and her daughter Shelby (Emily Sue Barker), the “prettiest girl in town” who is gearing up to marry a nice “good ole boy.”

The title “Steel Magnolias,” playwright Harling told Country Living in 2017, “ ... is meant to capture the complex mix of strength and vulnerability exhibited by the women he knew growing up who are portrayed in the play.  “My mother would always say to handle magnolia blossoms carefully because they bruise so easily. You think of this flower that is so delicate and has to be handled with care - but is actually made of much stronger stuff.”

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12 and Friday, Dec. 13; and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14. Tickets are $15/adults, $13/members, and $5 for youth 18 and under and are available through the theater office (info@lcct.org or 563-3424) or one hour before curtain. The theater is located at 2 Theater St. in Damariscotta.
