Oct. 1 talk on apple growing
The topic for the next program of the Garden Club of Wiscasset is “Apples: Learn the Essentials of Growing Your Own Apples." It is on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. at First Congregational Church (fellowship hall), 28 High St. in Wiscasset and is free and open to the public. There is a brief business meeting after the program.
The speaker, Ron Ross, will discuss what it takes to plan, plant and have apples from your own tree. Topics include varieties, site selection, planting and caring for young trees.
Ross is a longtime apple enthusiast. In 2014, he and Fred Kraeuter began Burnham Cove Heirloom Orchard in a field across from their home in Boothbay. They have 70 trees (50 different heritage varieties) with each season seeing more trees bearing fruit.
Ross and Kraeuter also coordinate Apple Corps, a dedicated volunteer group that is part of Boothbay Region Land Trust (BRLT), which maintains orchards at Oak Point Farm and Sunny Meadows Preserve. Ross is known for his annual apple talk and tasting event hosted by BRLT each fall, which brings over a hundred people to learn about heirloom apples, sample varieties and tour the orchard at Oak Point Farm.
Join us and learn about the amazing apple.
