Portland-based musicians Susanne Gerry, Seth Warner and the Old Souls will launch the 2019 concert season at the Opera House in Boothbay Harbor by presenting a complete live performance of Carole King’s 1971 record “Tapestry” on Saturday, Jan. 12.

Featuring some of her generations best loved songs including “Natural Woman” and “I Feel The Earth Move” and “You’ve Got A Friend” – Carole King’s second LP as a solo artist catapulted her status as a masterful and definitive voice of the singer-songwriter movement. Already established by the mid ’60s as prolific and effective New York based writer for hire with hits for Aretha Franklin, The Drifters, The Monkees and The Shirelles – King moved to Los Angeles in 1968 and found new inspiration in the L.A. scene and especially with her Laurel Canyon neighbors James Taylor and Joni Mitchell. Early on she helped form the band The City and worked as a session musician playing piano on B.B. King’s album “Indianola Mississippi Seeds.”

“Tapestry” was universally loved and critically acclaimed. It earned four Grammy Awards in 1972 making King the first solo female artist to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, and the first woman to win the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. Eventually selling over 11 million units, this ground-breaking album covers an impressive range of styles, yet never seems to overstep but rather the performances reaffirm that both the musicians and the singers give the songs just enough direction and energy, but always allow music to feel and sound organic. R&B, gospel, confessional folk, Tin Pan Alley, folk and rock are all seamlessly united throughout with supremely efficient yet heartfelt writing and convincing performances.

Susanne Gerry and Seth Warner and their band “The Old Souls” will start the evening with an acoustic set of original music along with a selection of material from the early ’70s that shares much with in common with the time and place that produced “Tapestry. Following a set break, the full band will return to the stage and finish the evening with a complete performance of “Tapestry.” The band includes the guitarist Andy Argondizza, drummer Marty Joyce, keyboardist Mark Napoleone, bassist David Thibodeau and featured vocalist Gina Alibrio. Seth Warner last appeared at the Opera House as the leader of the band supporting Francine Reed.

Discounted tickets for the performance are $15 and currently available directly from the Opera House Box Office at 86 Townsend Avenue, Boothbay Harbor or by calling 633-5159. Regular tickets are $20 and available online at www.boothbayoperahouse.com and at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 7:30 concert.
