Now, 10 years later on the same Greek island of Kalokairi, Donna (Meryl Streep) has retired from running her small hotel, and daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is taking over. Pregnant, and concerned that she can't do it all by herself, even with guidance from mom’s lifelong friends Tanya and Rosie, Sophie decides to find out more about Donna’s (young Donna played by Lily James) past. She delves into how her mom ran the hotel, met each one of Sophie’s dads and raised a baby, all on her own … and has an unexpected visit from someone she had never met before, her grandmother (Cher). Through flashbacks, we learn how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present.
